Step 1: Prepping Furniture For Painting

How To Paint Furniture

When it comes to learning how to prep furniture for painting, the biggest step before you choose color is prep. Making sure your wood is fully prepped for a painting project is what will help make it a success or turn into a total failure.

Before you paint you need to sand. First, screw in every screw within the piece of furniture so that it is very secure and out of the way for when you begin to paint.

Then, begin sanding the wood - be sure to maintain proper ventilation and follow all requirements for safety when sanding wood. Use an 80 grit or rough sanding block, or a piece of sandpaper, to really take down the rough parts on the surface of the wood.

Once you have gone over the entire surface of the furniture with the rough grit sandpaper, it is time to move to a fine grit sandpaper - 120 or larger - to really smooth out the surface of the wooden furniture so you get a very nice even appearance when you paing. Make sure you hit every surface so it is all uniformed in appearance.

Step 3: Painting Your Furniture

Once you have sanded down the piece of furniture you are going to paint and you have chosen your paint color - its time to get to work. Using a roller apply either a Semi-Gloss Paint or a Flat Finish Paint to your piece of wooden furniture. Be sure to coat the entire surface of the wood with it standing in the position it will be used - this will allow it to have no strange drip marks showing in a way that would be inconsistent with the way it sits in a room.

After fully painting it, allow it to dry and paint it again so that it gets two nice coats of paint. Then, when those have both fully dried, relax, enjoy your freshly painted piece of furniture, and feel proud of a job well done!
